Best Run Clubs in Chicago for Meeting People (2026): 8 Clubs, Checked for Winter

KoyaUpdated:

It's November, it's dark by the time you leave work, and the apps feel like the only way left to meet anyone. That's exactly when a standing weekly run starts to pay off.

The best Chicago run clubs for meeting people are the ones that end somewhere you can keep talking. Our top three: Chicago Beer Runners (Mondays in Lincoln Square and Wednesdays in Lakeview, back at the bar by about 7:10 p.m.), the 606 Run Club (Tuesdays in Bucktown, then a shuffleboard club) and South Loop Runners (a Thursday glow run and a Sunday run that ends at a coffee shop). Five more are in the table below. Good news for winter: Chicago Beer Runners and the 606 Run Club say they run year-round, and Fleet Feet doesn't cancel for rain or snow. None of these is a singles event; they're running groups where friendships, and sometimes dates, happen.

Full disclosure: we make GRASS, a dating app for meeting new people through sports. Every schedule below comes from the club's own website, its Meetup page, calendar or flyer, or the store that hosts it (we say which), checked on November 2, 2026. Clubs change times, especially in winter, so confirm before you go.

Why Chicago Run Clubs Work for Meeting People

Chicago winters are long and cold, and that's when it's hardest to meet anyone new. Weekends drift toward the same bars and the same swiping. Apps are good at introductions; they're bad at the second, third and tenth time you see someone. A weekly run fixes that part: you show up on the same night, run at a pace where you can still talk, and after a few weeks people know your name. Walking into a group of regulars alone is the awkward bit, which is why the clubs below that say first-timers are welcome are a good place to start.

For the bigger picture, our guide on how to make friends as an adult explains why repeat contact matters more than one great conversation. If you're mostly here for dating, our Chicago dating apps guide covers the apps side.

2026 Ranking: The 8 Best Run Clubs in Chicago for Meeting People

How we ordered them: first, clubs whose own pages build in a place to hang out after the run; then clubs with social meetups or free weekly runs; and last, 3RUN2, which is great if you're fast but says it has no pace groups.

1. Chicago Beer Runners

The most social schedule we found, and it runs all winter. Chicago Beer Runners meets on Mondays at Wild Goose Bar & Grill (4600 N Lincoln Ave) and on Wednesdays at Kirkwood (2934 N Sheffield Ave). Both nights the group gathers at 6:30 p.m., starts running at 6:35 and is back at the bar by about 7:10. Its recommended Monday route is the 3-mile Horner Park loop, and you can cut it short or add on. There are no formal pace groups, but with people running anywhere from 7- to 14-minute miles, the group says, "you'll usually find someone to run with." It also says, "We meet year-round," whether it's 85 and sunny or 10 and snowing. Its Meetup page listed runs for November 2, 4, 9 and 11 when we checked.

  • When and where: Mon 6:30 p.m., Wild Goose (Lincoln Square); Wed 6:30 p.m., Kirkwood (Lakeview)
  • Distance: About 3 miles, beginner to experienced
  • Best for: Anyone who wants the bar built in, all year

2. 606 Run Club

A Bucktown run with a different kind of after-party. The 606 Run Club (the 606 Athletic Club on Meetup) meets on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. at Park No. 529, 2155 W Wabansia Ave, for a 3-mile run that splits into pace groups and distances if needed. Afterward it heads to the Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club, which it calls its "post run re-hydration location"; bring an ID, because the bar won't let you in without one. The club says first-timers and non-runners are welcome, and that it runs year-round. Its Meetup page listed Tuesday runs every week through November 24. The group description still mentions Thursdays too, but no Thursday run was on its calendar after October 8.

  • When and where: Tue 6:30 p.m., Park No. 529 (Bucktown)
  • Distance: About 3 miles, pace groups if needed
  • Best for: Wicker Park, Bucktown and Logan Square folks who want a game night after

3. South Loop Runners

The best pick in the South Loop. South Loop Runners meets at the Agora statues (Michigan Ave and Roosevelt) and says runners of all paces and experience levels are welcome. Its calendar lists a Thursday "Glow run" at 6:15 p.m. (bring something that lights up; the club hands some out to new runners while supplies last), after which the group heads to a South Loop restaurant for drinks or food. On Saturdays at 9 a.m. there's the "Anchor Run" out to the anchor at the end of Navy Pier, with various pace groups, and on Sunday mornings a run of about 30 minutes (2 to 3 miles) that ends at a South Loop coffee shop. Its home page and calendar list different start times for Sunday, so check the calendar the week you go.

  • When and where: Thu 6:15 p.m., Sat 9 a.m., Sun morning, all from the Agora statues
  • Distance: From a 2-to-3-mile coffee run to the Saturday long run
  • Best for: South Loop, Printers Row and Prairie District neighbors

4. Universal Sole Monday Fun Run

A Lakeview run that starts and ends at a bar. Universal Sole, the running store, hosts Monday fun runs from Bitter Pops Bottle Shop at 3357 N Lincoln Ave in Lakeview. Its 2026 flyer lists the dates: November 9, 16, 23 and 30, then December 14, 21 and 28, at 6:30 p.m. (the page text says to meet from 6 to 6:25 p.m. and the run goes at 6:30). Routes vary from 3 to 6 miles, all paces, run or walk, and the store suggests bringing a change of clothes because Bitter Pops is a full-service bar.

  • When and where: Selected Mondays, 6:30 p.m., Bitter Pops (see the flyer for dates)
  • Distance: 3 to 6 miles, run or walk
  • Best for: People who want a Monday-night reset with a drink after

5. Frontrunners Chicago

Chicago's LGBTQ+ running and walking club. Frontrunners Chicago says it meets on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 9 a.m. at the Totem Pole on the lakefront trail near Addison St, just south of the Waveland tennis courts. Its community page says local venues let it offer weekly brunch and dinner meetups alongside the runs and walks. Membership is $35 a year ($55 for couples). It's a community first, so come for the running and the people; the etiquette tips below apply.

  • When and where: Tue 6:30 p.m., Sat 9 a.m., Totem Pole near Addison
  • Cost: Membership $35 a year
  • Best for: LGBTQ+ runners and walkers who want a lakefront crew with brunch built in

6. Fleet Feet Running Club

The easiest free run to fit into your week. Fleet Feet Chicago hosts free weekly runs, 3 miles at its city stores, that it says are open to any and all paces, and its pacers don't go back into the store until the last runner finishes. No stop after is listed.

Store

Day and time

Old Town

Mon and Thu, 6 p.m.

Lakeview

Mon, 6 p.m.

Lincoln Square

Mon, 6 p.m.; Sat, 8 a.m.

South Loop

Mon, 6 p.m.; Wed, 6 p.m. (women's group)

Its suburban stores run too, including Oak Park (Mondays at 6:30 p.m.) and Elmhurst (Thursdays at 6 p.m.).

7. CARA Run Crews

Free neighborhood crews from the Chicago Area Runners Association. CARA says there is no cost to take part; you sign up as a free "Friend" level member first. Its crew list includes Lakeview on Tuesdays at 6 a.m., River Park on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m., Humboldt Park on Tuesdays at 6 p.m., and West Loop and Edgewater on Thursdays at 6 a.m. Runners and walkers of all paces are welcome. The list doesn't give meeting spots and some of its sign-up text still refers to 2025, so open each crew's info page to confirm it's running.

  • When and where: Tuesdays and Thursdays, by neighborhood (early morning or evening)
  • Cost: Free with a free CARA "Friend" sign-up
  • Best for: Early risers and anyone who wants a crew close to home

8. 3RUN2

3RUN2 meets Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. in University Village (the cul-de-sac just west of Halsted and Maxwell) and Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. at 2511 N Kedzie in Logan Square, at distances from a 5K to a 10K. Check the pace first: the club says it's typically 7 to 10 minutes a mile, "We do not offer pace groups," and you should bring a friend if you're worried about running alone. Fill out its waiver before you show up. Saturday runs vary; the club says they're typically at Bang Bang Pie in Logan Square from after the marathon through May, and it posts details on Discord.

  • When and where: Tue 6:30 p.m., University Village; Thu 6:30 p.m., Logan Square
  • Pace: About 7 to 10 minutes a mile, no pace groups
  • Best for: Faster runners who want a crew to train with

Clubs we couldn't verify. Several popular Chicago groups in older "best run clubs" lists don't publish a current schedule on an official page we could find, so we couldn't confirm their times. They may be great; they just aren't ranked here.

Which Chicago Run Clubs Keep Running in Winter

This is the question most Chicago run club lists skip. Here's what the clubs' own pages say:

  • Says it runs year-round: Chicago Beer Runners ("85 and sunny or 10 and snowing") and the 606 Run Club. Both had November dates on their Meetup pages.
  • Dated through December: Universal Sole's flyer lists Monday fun runs on November 9, 16, 23 and 30 and December 14, 21 and 28.
  • Rain or snow, with limits: Fleet Feet won't cancel "if it is simply raining or snowing," but does cancel for dangerous weather like ice storms, hail or high winds, a temperature below 0°F, a wind chill below -15°F, or icy or snowy paths. It posts cancellations on each store's social accounts.
  • Rain or shine, within reason: CARA's crews run rain or shine, but not in lightning or other unsafe conditions.
  • Moves for winter: 3RUN2's Saturday run typically moves to Bang Bang Pie after the marathon.
  • Training for spring: CARA's winter training programs start November 9 (half marathon, through January 30, 2027) and December 21 (marathon, through April 25, 2027). These are training programs, separate from the free crews.

A few practical notes. The Park District says it's repairing the Lakefront Trail one section at a time, starting at the south end and moving north, so expect detours. South Loop Runners' weather guide suggests warming up indoors before you head out and watching for ice on sidewalks and paths. And with sunset well before 6 p.m. from November on, every weeknight run here starts in the dark, so wear something reflective.

How to Actually Meet People at Your First Chicago Run

  1. Arrive 10 minutes early. The few minutes before the run are the easiest time to talk.
  2. Tell the leader it's your first time. Most will point you to a pace group or a shorter loop.
  3. Bring a friend if you can. Walking in with one person you know makes the first night a lot easier.
  4. Stay for whatever comes after. The bar, the shuffleboard or the coffee is where conversations turn into plans. You don't have to drink; plenty of people grab a soda or a coffee.
  5. Go back the same night for four weeks. The first time is the awkward one. By the fourth, you'll know a few names.

Easy openers: "Is this your first time here?" and "Are you training for anything?" To turn a chat into a plan, ask who's coming next week and say you'll see them there. If you want to ask someone out, keep it low-key: suggest grabbing food after next week's run. Our guide to run clubs as the new dating scene covers how that tends to go.

A little etiquette goes a long way. People come to run, not to be hit on mid-mile. Talk to everyone, not just the person you're interested in, take no for an answer, and keep any first one-on-one meetup in a busy public place. You want to be welcome back next week.

When the Club Times Don't Work for You

Clubs are great once you're in the rhythm, but they're fixed: a dark Tuesday at 6:30 isn't for everyone. On GRASS you post the run you actually want, like a Saturday-morning lakefront loop or an easy run on the 606, with your own time, pace and place, and see who replies. Post it every week and the same people can keep showing up, which is the part that turns strangers into friends. You meet by doing something together, not by trading messages first, and whether it turns into a running friendship or a date is up to you.

We're still early in Chicago, so invite a running friend along. GRASS is free to download, with optional Premium and Ultimate tiers. Post your first run on GRASS.

Meeting someone new for a run? Make it a group run on a busy stretch of the lakefront or the 606 before any one-on-one, get there on your own, keep your home address to yourself, and tell a friend where you'll be.

Chicago Run Clubs FAQ

What are the best run clubs in Chicago for meeting people?

Start with Chicago Beer Runners (Mondays at Wild Goose and Wednesdays at Kirkwood, 6:30 p.m., a bar after), the 606 Run Club (Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. in Bucktown, then Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club) and South Loop Runners (a Thursday glow run with food after, and a Sunday coffee run). Universal Sole's Monday fun runs, Frontrunners Chicago, Fleet Feet's free store runs, CARA's run crews and 3RUN2 are also good options.

Do Chicago run clubs run in the winter?

Many do. Chicago Beer Runners says it meets year-round, even at 10 degrees and snowing, and the 606 Run Club also says it runs year-round. Universal Sole's flyer lists Monday runs through late December. Fleet Feet doesn't cancel for rain or snow, but does cancel for dangerous weather, temperatures below 0°F, wind chills below -15°F or icy paths.

Are Chicago run clubs free?

Many are. Fleet Feet's weekly runs are free, CARA's run crews are free once you sign up as a free "Friend" member, and Chicago Beer Runners and the 606 Run Club list no fee on their Meetup events. Frontrunners Chicago lists a $35 yearly membership. You pay for your own drinks or coffee after.

Is there a run club on the Lakefront Trail?

Yes. Frontrunners Chicago meets at the Totem Pole near Addison on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and South Loop Runners starts from the Agora statues near the lakefront, with a Saturday run out to Navy Pier. The Park District is repairing the trail section by section, so expect some detours.

Do I need to be fast to join a run club in Chicago?

No. Chicago Beer Runners says paces range from 7- to 14-minute miles, Fleet Feet and South Loop Runners welcome all paces, and Universal Sole's Monday run is open to runners and walkers. 3RUN2 is the exception: it runs about 7 to 10 minutes a mile with no pace groups.

Are run clubs in Chicago good for dating?

They can be, as long as dating isn't the only reason you go. Don't lead with it: be a regular first, and ask someone for coffee after a few weeks. Seeing the same people every week is how a lot of friendships, and sometimes dates, start. If none of the club times work for you, GRASS lets you post your own run at a time that does and invite people along.

Pick One Run This Week

You don't need to wait for spring to start. Pick one run from the table, go the same night for four weeks, and stay for whatever comes after. If none of the times fit, open GRASS and post your own run.
