Most dating apps are free right up until you want more likes, or want to see who already liked you. Here is what each one actually gives you without paying.
The 10 best free dating apps for 2026 are: 1) GRASS, 2) Hinge, 3) Facebook Dating, 4) Bumble, 5) Tinder, 6) OkCupid, 7) Coffee Meets Bagel, 8) Feeld, 9) Match, and 10) eharmony. Best for meeting up in person: GRASS. Best free start for a relationship: Hinge. No paid tier we could find: Facebook Dating. Newest chat rules: Bumble, where anyone can message first since August 11, 2026. Updated November 1, 2026.
"Free" here means you can make a profile, match, and start talking without paying. Paid tiers mostly sell volume (more likes) and visibility (who liked you, boosts). About 35% of US online dating users say they have ever paid, according to Pew Research Center, so roughly two in three have never paid at all.
How We Ranked the Free Versions
We ranked on one thing: how far the free version gets you toward meeting someone in person. Can you match and start a conversation without paying? What's locked, and does the lock actually stop you? Every claim below comes from the app's own App Store description, help pages or official announcements, checked November 1, 2026. We left out apps whose free-tier terms we couldn't confirm from an official source, including Plenty of Fish.
We make GRASS, a dating app for meeting new people through sports. It ranks first on this list's one criterion because you don't need a match to reply to an event invite, so the step where many free chats stall (match, chat, wait for someone to suggest a plan) isn't there.
Free vs Paid at a Glance
App | What you can do free | What costs money |
|---|---|---|
Reply to event invites with no match needed | Optional Premium and Ultimate tiers | |
Hinge | Free to use, with limited likes | Unlimited likes, seeing everyone who likes you |
Facebook Dating | Meta calls it "a free dating experience" | No paid tier we could find |
Bumble | Matching; new chat rules for everyone in a match | Advanced filters, extended matches, Incognito, Travel Mode |
Tinder | Likes, matching and chat | Unlimited likes, ad-free swiping, seeing who likes you |
OkCupid | Free profile and matching | Seeing who likes you first, unlimited likes, Dealbreakers |
Coffee Meets Bagel | A daily batch of curated matches | Unlimited Suggested, unblurring your likes |
Feeld | Free to download and use | Seeing who liked you, private photos (Majestic) |
Match | Daily suggestions, chat with recommended matches, events | Unlimited profiles, advanced filters, boosts |
eharmony | Unlimited matches, sending and receiving Likes | Messaging (listed under Premium) |
If you want free dating apps that actually work for meeting people, pair one app built around plans, like GRASS, with one big pool like Hinge or Facebook Dating. If you'd rather never see a paywall, Facebook Dating is the one.
2026 Ranking: The 10 Best Free Dating Apps
1. GRASS — Best Free App for Actually Meeting Up
GRASS skips the step where many free chats stall: matching, then chatting, then hoping someone suggests a plan. Someone posts a Saturday trail hike or a 7am run; you reply and show up. Its App Store listing puts it plainly: "No match needed. See event invites, reply, and go." You're choosing a plan, not judging a profile photo, and the first conversation happens on the trail.
- What free gets you: Reply to event invites with no match needed. Free to download; optional Premium and Ultimate tiers.
- Best for: Hikers, runners, climbers, gym regulars, and anyone whose chats never turn into a date
- Watch out for: GRASS is new in most US cities, so you may be the one posting the first plan in your area. Keep a bigger app running alongside it while it grows.
Already going for a run this weekend? Download GRASS and post it as a plan, then see who replies.
2. Hinge — Best Free Start for a Relationship
Hinge's App Store listing says: "The app is free to use. Members looking to see everyone who likes them or send unlimited likes can upgrade to Hinge+." So free accounts have a like limit, and they don't get the full list of who liked them. Hinge doesn't publish the free like number; figures you see elsewhere are third-party estimates. If you want something serious and won't pay, start here: the prompt-based profiles give you something specific to respond to.
- Free tip: With limited likes, send fewer and comment on a specific prompt instead of liking a photo.
3. Facebook Dating — No Paid Tier We Could Find
If you want a completely free dating app, this is the closest. Meta describes Facebook Dating as "a free dating experience within the Facebook app", and says its September 2025 features were built so people can meet "without having to resort to endless swiping or paying to unlock product features." It lives inside the Facebook app, so you need a Facebook account, and we found no paid tier.
4. Bumble — Best Free App After Its 2026 Chat Change
Older guides still say only women can message first on Bumble, with 24 hours to do it. That changed on August 11, 2026: "anyone in a match can send the first message," the other person now has 72 hours to reply (up from 24), and there's "only one initial message allowed." The chat opens once they reply, and Bumble says people who send a low-effort opener, like a one-word message, get prompted to be more thoughtful. Bumble's listing says the app is free and lists its paid extras as "advanced filters, extended matches, Incognito Mode, and Travel Mode." The new chat flow isn't on that list.
5. Tinder — Most Widely Tried, With Paid Unlimited Likes
Tinder is the dating app US online daters most often say they have tried: 46% in Pew's 2023 survey. Its listing says that if you don't buy a subscription, "you can simply continue using Tinder for free." Its subscription page shows what free users give up: Tinder Plus adds "Unlimited Likes" and "Swipe ad-free," and "Tinder Gold shows everyone who's already into you." Free still gets you likes, matches and chat.
6. OkCupid — Best Free Profile Depth
OkCupid lets you "create a free dating profile" and answer its long question set, which matters if values or politics are dealbreakers for you. Premium adds "See who likes you without having to like them first," unlimited likes, and Dealbreakers.
7. Coffee Meets Bagel — Best Free App for Low Effort
Coffee Meets Bagel calls itself "a free dating app" and sends "daily batches of highly curated matches," so there's no endless feed. Premium adds unlimited Suggested profiles and lets you "unblur all your likes." Good if you want a few profiles a day and nothing more.
8. Feeld — Best Free App for Alternative Dating
Feeld describes itself as "an alternative dating app" for open-minded people. It's free to download and use; the paid Majestic membership adds "seeing who liked you on the app," private photos for Connections, and "one free Ping a day."
9. Match — Free to Start, Premium for Filters
Match's listing says that "with no subscription required" you can build a profile, get daily match suggestions, "chat with recommended matches," and join singles events. Premium unlocks unlimited profiles, advanced filters and profile boosts.
10. eharmony — Free to Match, Messaging Is Premium
eharmony's membership FAQ says the free Basic plan includes "unlimited matches and the ability to send and receive Likes," while Premium lists "unlimited matches and messaging." It's on this list because you can try the compatibility matching free, but expect to upgrade if you want to talk.
How to Get Dates Without Paying
- Use two apps, not five. One big pool (Hinge, Tinder or Facebook Dating) and one that gets you out the door, like GRASS.
- Spend limited likes carefully. A few specific likes with a comment beat 50 blind swipes.
- Suggest a plan early. A walk, a run or a coffee within a week. Free chats die when nobody proposes anything.
- Don't pay just to see who liked you. Try one month of a paid tier only after you know which app is getting you dates.
- Meet in public first. Tell a friend where you are going, and never send money or gift cards to someone you have not met.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a completely free dating app?
Facebook Dating is the closest. Meta calls it a free dating experience inside the Facebook app and says its features are meant to work without paying to unlock them; we found no paid tier. Every other app on this list has an optional paid tier.
Which free dating app actually leads to meeting people?
Apps that start with a plan rather than a swipe. On GRASS, a dating app for meeting new people through sports, you can reply to a hike or run invite with no match needed first. On swipe apps, the free version works best if you suggest meeting within a few days.
Is Hinge free?
Yes. Hinge says the app is free to use. Hinge+ adds unlimited likes and lets you see everyone who likes you; free accounts have a like limit that Hinge does not publish.
Is Bumble free?
Yes. Bumble is free to download and use; its paid extras are advanced filters, extended matches, Incognito Mode and Travel Mode. Since August 11, 2026, anyone in a match can send the first message, limited to one opener, and the other person has 72 hours to reply.
Is Tinder free?
Yes. Tinder says you can keep using it for free without a subscription. Unlimited likes and ad-free swiping come with Tinder Plus, and seeing everyone who already likes you comes with Tinder Gold.
Can you see who liked you for free?
Usually not the full list. Hinge (Hinge+), Tinder (Gold), OkCupid (Premium), Coffee Meets Bagel (Premium) and Feeld (Majestic) are among the apps that put it behind a paid tier.
Is it worth paying for a dating app?
Only once you know which app is working for you. About 35% of US online dating users have ever paid, per Pew Research Center, so roughly two in three never have. If you pay, try one month first.
Pick Two Apps and Make a Plan
You don't need a subscription to meet someone. Pick one app for volume, one that gets you outside, and suggest a plan sooner than feels natural. If you already run, hike or climb, download GRASS and post your next outing.
